- strong leg kicking on all four strokes over 20 metres
- swimming 25 metres on a favourite stroke
- swimming 20 metres on front crawl and backstroke
- swimming 15 metres breaststroke and 10 metres butterfly
- arm sculling – travelling feet first
- swimming 10 metres with clothes on for essential lifesaving skills

For confident early swimmers to learn front crawl, develop backstroke, rotation and lifesaving
- strong leg kicking on all four strokes over 15 metres
- swimming 10 metres on front crawl
- learning breaststroke and butterfly arm strokes
- learning handstands and somersaults
- swimming 5 metres with clothes on for essential lifesaving skills

For confident swimmers to learn about competitive swimming, further develop technique on all four strokes for lifelong fitness, and lifesaving
- swimming 25 metres on front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
- swimming 15 metres butterfly
- swimming 50 metres on a favourite stroke
- learning competitive turns for each stroke
- swimming 15 metres with clothes on for essential lifesaving skills

For confident swimmers to develop swimming skills and technique over 400 metres, fitness swimming and lifesaving
- swimming 50 metres on front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
- swimming 25 metres butterfly
- swimming 100 metres showing 3 different strokes
- swimming 400 metres continuously on a choice of strokes
- lifesaving skills
